Mathura: A police constable stationed at Govind Nagar Police Station in Mathura was caught accepting a bribe of ₹50,000, an officer announced Friday.
Superintendent of Police, City, Rajeev Kumar Singh, stated that Shubham Chauhan had demanded a monthly bribe of ₹20,000 from Sanju Thakur, an e-rickshaw driver, in exchange for allowing him to operate his vehicle in the Govind Nagar area.
Feeling harassed, Thakur approached the Anti-Corruption Department and filed a formal complaint against Chauhan, who is from Shamli. To catch him in the act, police provided Thakur with banknotes treated with a chemical, likely phenolphthalein, which reacts visibly when handled.
On Thursday, Chauhan was summoned behind the police station, where he was caught accepting the money. When his hands were washed with water, they turned red and pink due to the chemical on the notes, confirming he received the cash. Chauhan, who has been with the force for five years, is currently in custody at Farah Police Station and will be presented in court today.
Senior Superintendent of Police Shlok Kumar confirmed that Chauhan has been suspended and a departmental inquiry has been initiated against him.
