Guwahati: In an effort to combat interstate drug trafficking, Assam Police successfully intercepted a significant consignment of narcotics valued at Rs 15 crore in the Cachar district, which borders Manipur and Mizoram. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Sunday that the operation led to the recovery of 50,000 Yaba tablets, hidden in five packets within a vehicle that was stopped at Ghoongur Bypass.
The operation was initiated based on credible intelligence, and two individuals have been arrested in connection with the drug trafficking charges. CM Sarma confirmed the seizure through a post on X.
Additionally, Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the issue of drug-related activities in the northeastern states during the 72nd plenary session of the North Eastern Council in Agartala, emphasizing the need for enhanced efforts to eliminate drug issues. He called for a nationwide initiative aimed at achieving a “Nasha Mukt Bharat” (drug-free India) and urged Chief Ministers to focus on the effective implementation of three new criminal laws: the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA). Shah also announced plans for a meeting in February 2025 to review the progress of these laws and highlighted the government’s commitment to peace in the northeastern region, noting that since coming to power, 20 accords have been signed and over 10,000 militants have surrendered.
