Guwahati (Assam): The redevelopment of 60 railway stations in the North East is currently in progress under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with 50 of those stations located in Assam.
Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Northeast Frontier Railway, explained to ANI that the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to enhance railway stations across India. In the North East, 60 stations are being redeveloped, with 50 selected in Assam. Some of these station improvements are at advanced stages, and they will be commissioned gradually. Notable stations undergoing redevelopment include Haiborgaon, Narengi, Jagiroad, and Chaparmukh.
Sharma highlighted that the redevelopment plans include the addition of modern amenities such as lifts and escalators, improved approach roads, designated entry and exit points, parking facilities, and services for persons with disabilities.
Chetan Kumar Shrivastava, General Manager of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), recently conducted a thorough inspection to assess the progress of the redevelopment work at Narengi, Jagiroad, Chaparmukh, and Haiborgaon stations. These four stations are included in the 50 designated for transformation under the scheme.
The investment for upgrades is substantial, with estimates of Rs 30.95 crore for Narengi, Rs 31.18 crore for Jagiroad, Rs 31.87 crore for Chaparmukh, and Rs 14.94 crore for Haiborgaon, as reported by the Northeast Frontier Railway. In total, 92 stations in the NFR region are targeted for redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), which aims to significantly enhance the passenger experience with state-of-the-art facilities.
The infrastructure development focuses on making these stations modern and passenger-friendly, enhancing amenities, aesthetics, and introducing features such as improved waiting areas, better lighting, clear signage, clean restrooms, and easily accessible circulating areas.
Additionally, the Railway Ministry has announced plans to transform Guwahati Railway Station into an IT hub and a world-class facility.
“Recently, the Union Railway Minister revealed plans to develop Guwahati Railway Station as an IT Hub. A multi-story building will accommodate the IT sector, along with contemporary amenities as part of a world-class station initiative. We expect to finalize the design soon and commence construction,” Kapinjal Kishore Sharma noted.
