Retired IPS officer Acharya Kishore Kunal dies of cardiac arrest in Patna

Patna: Acharya Kishore Kunal, a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and founder of the Mahadev Mandir Trust in Bihar, died from a cardiac arrest on Sunday morning in Patna, as confirmed by his son. He was 73 years old. Kunal passed away at Mahavir Vatsalya Hospital. Following his retirement, he played a pivotal role.

Patna: Acharya Kishore Kunal, a retired Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and founder of the Mahadev Mandir Trust in Bihar, died from a cardiac arrest on Sunday morning in Patna, as confirmed by his son. He was 73 years old.

Kunal passed away at Mahavir Vatsalya Hospital. Following his retirement, he played a pivotal role in establishing the Ayodhya Temple Trust and served as the chairman of the Bihar State Religious Trust Board. Additionally, he was the secretary of the Mahavir Mandir Trust in Patna, a philanthropic organization known for its extensive contributions to education and healthcare.

Under his leadership, the Mahavir Mandir Trust launched and managed numerous significant initiatives, including schools and cancer hospitals. He was instrumental in founding notable institutions like Gyan Niketan, a prominent school in Patna, and the Mahavir Cancer Institute, which provides essential healthcare services.

Born on August 10, 1950, in Baruraj village, Muzaffarpur district, Kunal had a distinguished career in public service, academia, and philanthropy. He began his education in Baruraj and graduated from Patna University, demonstrating exceptional skills as a Sanskrit scholar, which he harmonized with his commitment to service.

Kunal joined the IPS in 1972, starting with the Gujarat cadre, and climbed the ranks to serve as Senior Superintendent of Police in Patna. From 1990 to 1994, he worked as an Officer on Special Duty in the Home Ministry, where he was known for his mediation expertise. Notably, during VP Singh’s prime ministership, he acted as a Special Officer to facilitate discussions between the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Babri Masjid Action Committee regarding the Ayodhya issue.

After retiring from the IPS in 2000, Kunal shifted to academia, serving as the Vice Chancellor of Kameshwar Singh Darbhanga Sanskrit University until 2004, where he worked to revive traditional Sanskrit education and research. As the Administrator of the Bihar State Religious Trust Board, he implemented reforms to promote inclusivity and eliminate caste discrimination in religious practices while enhancing the transparency and efficiency of temple administration.

Acharya Kishore Kunal’s life was characterized by an unwavering commitment to service, reform, and spiritual growth, with his contributions to resolving religious conflicts, modernizing Sanskrit education, and advocating for social welfare serving as a lasting legacy.
