Agartala: The Tripura government is contemplating filing FIRs against 34 tribal students who allegedly submitted false income certificates in order to secure post-matric scholarships, according to an official announcement on Thursday.
A senior official from the Tribal Welfare Department stated that show cause notices have been issued to the 34 students for using fake income certificates to apply for scholarships.
“We will wait for their responses to the show cause notices until April 16. If they do not reply by that date or if their replies are deemed unsatisfactory, we will proceed to file FIRs against all 34 students,” the official explained.
During the 2023-24 academic year, over 35,660 tribal students applied for post-matric scholarships through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), with 34,436 students being awarded scholarships totaling Rs 68.13 crore. The government covers all fees for eligible students at educational institutions for various courses.
Following a detailed examination of the documents submitted by the students, officials found that these 34 students from different districts had applied for post-matric scholarships by uploading bogus income certificates.
The official clarified that submitting forged income certificates or other necessary documents to obtain scholarships or financial aid constitutes embezzlement of public funds and official document forgery, which is a criminal offense.
Of the 34 students under scrutiny, three are from Gomati district, four from Khowai district, eight from West Tripura district, 13 from Sepahijala district, two each from Dhalai and South Tripura districts, and one each from North Tripura and Unakoti district.
