Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police filed an FIR against the Ansal Group on March 5, accusing the real estate company of cheating, criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, and organized crime. The FIR names several individuals associated with Ansal Properties and Infra Limited, including Pranav Ansal, Sushil Ansal, Sunil Kumar Gupta, Francette Patrica Atkinson, and Vinay Kumar Singh (Director). The charges listed include criminal breach of trust, forgery, cheating, conspiracy, and criminal intimidation.
The Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath, had previously ordered strict action in the matter, following concerns about homebuyers being defrauded by the company. The FIR was filed at the Gomti Nagar police station in Lucknow, after Adityanath instructed officials to protect the interests of affected homebuyers.
The Ansal Group is currently undergoing insolvency proceedings under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), as the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) admitted Ansal Properties and Infrastructure Limited (APIL) into the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process (CIRP). This followed a petition from IL&FS Financial Services, which alleged that Ansal API defaulted on a loan worth Rs 257 crore and failed to honor a settlement agreement.
The CM took a strong stance on the issue, noting that the government would not tolerate the cheating of homebuyers. He directed officials to file FIRs in other districts where similar fraud cases have been reported and ordered the formation of a committee to gather evidence for legal action.
Meanwhile, the NCLT declared Ansal API bankrupt, causing uncertainty for thousands of homebuyers, especially those who invested in projects like Sushant Golf City in Lucknow. Many investors have been waiting for possession of their properties since 2009. Protests have been staged by affected buyers, demanding government intervention.
With the FIRs now filed and a crackdown initiated, the state government has signaled its commitment to holding Ansal API accountable and protecting the interests of homebuyers across Uttar Pradesh.
