A US citizen was detained at Chennai International Airport on Sunday for carrying a satellite phone, which is prohibited for personal use in India. Airport officials informed that the individual, identified as David (55), was apprehended while preparing to board an early morning flight to Singapore. The CISF personnel on duty discovered the satellite phone in his possession, leading to his detention.
According to regulations set forth by the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and the Union Home Ministry, satellite phones have been banned for personal use in India since the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, where such devices were misused by terrorist groups. Satellite phones can only be used with prior approval from the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India.
David had previously traveled from the United States to New Delhi and then to the Andaman Islands without being questioned. However, the Airport Police confiscated his satellite phone and detained him in accordance with BCAS rules, as he did not possess a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the relevant department. Since the Mumbai attacks, India has heightened its security measures, which include strict regulations against the use of satellite phones without appropriate permission.
