Dehradun: The Chamoli district administration in Uttarakhand, following orders from Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, has initiated dredging work in the Pindar River to safeguard the town of Tharali. The goal is to channelize the river by dredging 1280 meters of its banks to prevent flooding in the area.
This action comes after heavy rains and a cloudburst in 2024 caused debris to accumulate in the river, threatening key locations such as Saraswati Vidya Mandir, the main market, and Ramlila Ground due to rising water levels. In response to this, CM Dhami instructed the district administration to take immediate measures to protect the town.
Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari stated that debris is being swiftly removed from the riverbanks under the Chief Minister’s direction, and the material will be disposed of in accordance with regulations. Tiwari assured that the work would be completed quickly to protect Tharali from potential disasters. Locals have expressed appreciation for the prompt action taken by CM Dhami and the district administration, emphasizing that this project will not only secure the town but also mitigate future flood risks.
The dredging is expected to regulate the river’s water levels and reduce the flood threat, ensuring Tharali’s safety.
Earlier on the same day, Tiwari addressed concerns about cracks in houses and roads in Joshimath. Responding to a viral video showing pits and collapsing walls, he clarified that the pits were old, dating back two years, and no new issues had arisen. He reassured that the situation remained stable and under continuous monitoring. The Indian Army had concluded search and rescue operations in the Mana area of Chamoli district on March 2, following an avalanche on February 28 that trapped Border Roads Organisation (BRO) workers.
