Neena Tiwana Honoured for Lifetime Contribution in Theatre

Veteran Punjabi theatre artist Neena Tiwana was recently conferred the Punjab Gaurav Award in recognition of her lifetime contribution to Punjabi theatre by the Punjab Art Council, Government of Punjab. The honour was presented by Padma Shri awardee Nirmal Rishi, who described Tiwana as her teacher and mentor.

    Early Life and Theatre Journey

Neena Tiwana, along with her late husband Harpal Tiwana, was among the first Punjabis to graduate from the National School of Drama in 1965, where they trained under renowned theatre guru Ebrahim Alkazi.

Over a career spanning more than six decades, she delivered memorable performances in numerous stage productions, especially in plays directed by her husband, including Kanak Di Balli, Loha Kut, Chamkaur Di Garhi, and the iconic Diva Bale Saari Raat. Many of these were later adapted into films.

    Contribution to Punjabi Theatre Movement

Together with Harpal Tiwana, Neena played a key role in establishing a professional Punjabi theatre movement that attracted paying audiences and elevated stage art in the region. Her performance as a Sardarni in the film Long da Lishkara made her a household name.

She also appeared in television series (Saanjhi Deewar) and feature films (such as Haat – The Bazar).

    Accolades and Mentorship

Neena Tiwana’s body of work has earned her numerous national and international awards, including:

    • Sangeet Natak Akademi Award presented by the President of India

    • Outstanding Sikh Women Award by SGPC

    • Indo-Canadian Times Award

    • Punjabi Cultural Society Chicago Award

    • Shiromani Adakara Award by Bhasha Vibhag, Punjab

She has also been a mentor to generations of theatre performers.

    Legacy and Current Work

Although health issues have limited her on-stage appearances, Tiwana continues to contribute to theatre through writing. She has authored a book on her late husband and is currently working on another about acting techniques. Her son, Manpal Tiwana, continues to preserve and revive many of her husband’s productions.
