NIA arrests 7 foreigners over terror links in India

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested seven foreign nationals six Ukrainian citizens and one US national for their alleged involvement in activities linked to militancy affecting India’s security.

The arrests were carried out at multiple locations, including airports in Kolkata, Delhi, and Lucknow. Authorities stated that the individuals were part of a suspected international network supporting insurgent groups operating in and around India’s northeastern region.

Allegations of training and weapons supply

According to the NIA, the accused had travelled to Mizoram without obtaining mandatory permits and later crossed into Myanmar. There, they allegedly established contact with ethnic armed groups linked to insurgent organisations impacting India.

Investigators claim the group was involved in training militants and facilitating the supply of weapons and advanced equipment, including drones sourced from Europe. The use of drone technology for surveillance and combat training is a key focus of the ongoing probe.

Use of drones and cross-border links

The agency has alleged that the accused played a role in transporting large consignments of drones into Myanmar via India. These drones were reportedly intended for use by armed groups engaged in insurgent activities.

Officials believe the network may have broader international connections, raising concerns about cross-border terrorism and the use of emerging technologies in militant operations.

Court remands accused to custody

A special NIA court in New Delhi has remanded all seven accused to custody for further investigation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). The agency had sought extended custody to interrogate the suspects and uncover additional links.

Legal proceedings are currently underway, and authorities are also working to identify other individuals who may be part of the network.

International response and Ukraine’s demand

Following the arrests, Ukraine has reportedly demanded the immediate release of its citizens, raising the issue through diplomatic channels. The development has added an international dimension to the case.

Meanwhile, the United States has acknowledged awareness of the arrest of its citizen and stated that it is monitoring the situation closely.
