Mohali: A horrific accident occurred in Mohali on Wednesday morning when a nilgai suddenly appeared in front of a speeding car near the airport.

The animal landed directly on the car’s hood, leading to a severe collision. While the occupants of the car escaped safely, the vehicle was badly damaged.

The nilgai sustained critical injuries, with its legs broken. Members of the Gau Seva Samiti rushed it to a hospital, but its condition was reported to be very serious.

Car Spins After Sudden Impact

Eyewitness Gagan Sharma said he was returning home after finishing his duty in the morning when the accident took place near Sector 80. He explained that the area is close to a forest, which likely led to the nilgai suddenly entering the road. A passing car collided directly with the animal, causing the vehicle to spin completely. Although the passengers were unharmed, the car suffered extensive damage. He added that if the incident had occurred during the day, it could have resulted in multiple casualties. The injured nilgai was bleeding heavily and was unable to stand after the crash.

Rescue Efforts and Response

Following the accident, the cow shelter team reached the spot and took the injured nilgai away for treatment. The damaged vehicle remained at the scene as the police team also arrived to assess the situation. A team from the cow hospital later reached the location to assist with the rescue efforts.

Call for Safety Measures

According to locals, while people gathered quickly after the accident, no immediate help was extended to the injured animal. Gagan informed the police and social workers, prompting swift action from rescue teams who transported the nilgai to Phase 1 Hospital. Residents have urged authorities to install warning signboards and rail guards along the road to prevent such incidents in the future, especially given the proximity to forested areas.
