No Deaths in UP Due to Codeine Cough Syrup: CM Yogi

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday strongly denied that any deaths in the state have been linked to the consumption of codeine-based cough syrup, asserting this in the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly amid heated debate over the issue. The Chief Minister emphasized that despite ongoing investigations into illegal cough syrup distribution and use, no fatality has been reported in Uttar Pradesh so far.

The Opposition had raised concerns in the Assembly, alleging that dangerous cough syrups containing narcotic codeine had led to serious health consequences and even deaths. CM Yogi challenged these claims, stating that official records do not show any deaths due to codeine cough syrup in the state.

Strict Action Under NDPS Act

The Chief Minister also reiterated that authorities are taking stringent action against those involved in the illegal manufacture, storage and distribution of codeine-based syrups under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. He highlighted efforts by multiple enforcement agencies to clamp down on the illicit trade and secure arrests.

So far, dozens of arrests have been made as part of a widespread crackdown, and raids continue across the state. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to probe the trafficking network, with agencies working to trace financial transactions and supply chains linked to the illegal syrup trade.

Political Back-and-Forth

The Opposition, however, has continued to criticize the government’s handling of the issue. Leaders questioned why properties associated with suspects have not faced demolition under the state’s well-known “bulldozer policy” and urged more accountability and urgency in tracing suspects who have fled abroad.

Senior ministers in the Yogi government, meanwhile, attacked the Opposition for politicizing the matter and urged parties to cooperate in rooting out the criminal networks behind the illegal cough syrup trade.

Ongoing Investigation and Public Safety Focus

Authorities maintain that the focus remains on protecting public health and safety while dismantling illegal networks. Despite high-profile seizures and charges, state officials reaffirm that Uttar Pradesh has not recorded any deaths due to the misuse of codeine cough syrup, even as probes and enforcement actions continue.
