Odisha Floods Claim 3 Lives, Over 2 Lakh People Affected Across 748 Villages

Bhubaneswar: Severe floods triggered by incessant rainfall and swelling rivers have claimed at least three lives and affected more than two lakh people across Odisha, with the worst-hit districts battling widespread inundation and large-scale evacuations.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said five districts—Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Mayurbhanj and Kendujhar—have been the worst affected. As of Wednesday afternoon, floods had impacted 44 blocks, 243 gram panchayats and 748 villages, while heavy rainfall also disrupted normal life in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Gajapati and Malkangiri.

30,000 People Evacuated, Relief Operations Intensified

Authorities have evacuated around 30,000 people from vulnerable and low-lying areas to relief centres and safer locations. Cooked meals, baby food and special arrangements for elderly people and women are being provided at the shelters.

According to the state government, 226 villages remain waterlogged, although floodwaters have started receding in some parts, particularly in Balasore district, allowing residents to gradually return home.

NDRF, ODRAF Teams Deployed as More Heavy Rain Predicted

The government has deployed 17 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), along with nearly 60 Fire Services teams, to strengthen rescue and relief efforts.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in districts including Bargarh, Balangir, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri and Rayagada, prompting authorities to place these areas on high alert. Rescue equipment and relief materials have been pre-positioned for any emergency.

Water Levels Recede in Some Areas, High Alert Continues

Three flood-related deaths have been reported from Kendujhar district, including a Fire Services personnel who was electrocuted while carrying out dewatering operations. The other victims include a minor who drowned in floodwaters and an elderly man who died after a wall collapsed on him.

Officials said the government has begun assessing damage to houses and will provide assistance to affected families as per official norms. Authorities are also closely monitoring river levels, with two gates of the Hirakud Dam currently open while the reservoir remains within the safe operating range.

The Odisha government has appealed to people to avoid flooded areas, not attempt to cross overflowing water bodies, and cooperate with evacuation orders. Citizens have been advised to dial 112 for emergency assistance.
