Congress Leader Partap Singh Bajwa Seeks Punjab Govt Report on FBI-Led Probe Into Crime Networks

Chandigarh: Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly Partap Singh Bajwa on Thursday urged the Punjab government to table a detailed report in the Vidhan Sabha on the findings of the FBI-led Operation Hard Ball investigation into alleged transnational organised crime networks.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Bajwa said the disclosures made by the US Department of Justice were serious and required a comprehensive explanation from the state government.

    Raises concerns over police-gangster nexus

Bajwa referred to allegations that Punjab Police Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra colluded with members of the Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gang to extort nearly $400,000 (around ₹3.8 crore) from an Indian-origin family in California by allegedly threatening to falsely implicate their relatives in a murder case.

He said the allegations raised serious questions about the functioning of the state’s law enforcement system and whether official machinery had been misused to facilitate organised crime.

    Demands detailed report

The Congress leader said the FBI-led investigation had exposed alleged links between transnational criminal networks associated with Lawrence Bishnoi, Goldy Brar, Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and Rohit Godara, who allegedly continued to operate extortion and other organised crimes through local operatives and financial channels.

Bajwa questioned whether such an alleged nexus between police officials and gangsters could function without political patronage and sought a detailed report on the action taken against those involved.

    Calls for transparency

He also asked the Punjab government to inform the House about the status of departmental and criminal proceedings, as well as measures being taken to dismantle any alleged police-gangster nexus.

Bajwa noted that following the FBI disclosures, Punjab Police transferred the officer concerned, initiated a departmental inquiry and later arrested him in an extortion case under the Prevention of Corruption Act.
