Phool Dei Festival: Uttarakhand’s Unique Tradition, Anand Mahindra Praises

Garhwal: The main ritual of the Phool Dei tradition involves children. On this day, children place flowers on the doors of homes and sing a traditional song:

    “Phool Dei, Chhamma Dei,
    Deni Dwar, Bhar Bhakar…”

These words mean a wish for happiness, prosperity, well-being, and a prosperous life in the home. This festival reflects the deep connection between nature, community, and cultural heritage in the Himalayan region.

Different Names in Different Regions of Uttarakhand

This festival is celebrated in both major cultural regions of Uttarakhand, Kumaon and Garhwal, where it is commonly known as Phool Dei.

In some regions, it is also known by other names, such as:
    • Phool Sagyan
    • Phool Sankrant
    • Meen Sankranti

In the Jaunsar region, the festival is locally called Goga. Despite the different names, the tradition of welcoming spring with flowers remains the same everywhere.

    Anand Mahindra Compares to Halloween

In his post, Anand Mahindra compared this tradition to Halloween, in which children also visit people from door to door.

However, he also pointed out a key difference. In Halloween, children ask for sweets by saying “trick or treat,” whereas in Phool Dei, children first offer people flowers and blessings.

Mahindra described this as a “beautiful difference,” saying that the festival reflects the spirit of generosity and positivity.

    Symbol of Respect for Nature

The Phool Dei festival also reflects respect for nature. As spring arrives in the Himalayan regions, colorful flowers bloom in the forests and hills.

Children collect these flowers and place them on the doors of their homes, symbolizing new life, prosperity, and harmony with nature.

Mahindra said that in today’s times, when discussions about environmental protection are increasing, such traditions should receive greater recognition.

Can Phool Dei Become a Global Festival?

In his message, Anand Mahindra suggested that in the future, like Holi, Phool Dei could become widely known beyond regional boundaries.

He concluded his post by saying that the children of Uttarakhand are his “Monday Motivation” because the festival reflects innocence, positivity, and a sense of community.

Following his post, many social media users are now eager to learn about this traditional spring festival of Uttarakhand.
