PM Modi to Visit Canada on December 11-12 as India, Canada Push to Strengthen Ties

Ottawa: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Canada on December 11 and 12, 2026, as New Delhi and Ottawa seek to strengthen bilateral relations and advance cooperation in trade, energy, technology and security.

The High Commission of India in Ottawa announced the visit on Friday following a telephone conversation between Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. Both leaders agreed to build on the recent positive momentum in bilateral ties and work towards tangible outcomes across key areas of their strategic partnership.

In a post on X, the Indian High Commission confirmed that Modi would travel to Canada on December 11-12.

During their conversation on Tuesday, Modi described the exchange with Carney as warm and productive, emphasising the importance of expanding cooperation between the two countries.

“Had a warm and productive conversation with Prime Minister Mark Carney. We agreed to build on the positive momentum in India-Canada ties and work towards concrete outcomes across key areas of our Strategic Partnership, including trade, energy, technology, security and people-to-people ties,” Modi wrote on X.

He added that India and Canada were contributing towards a more stable and prosperous world.

India, Canada Aim to Conclude Trade Agreement

According to a statement from the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to concluding negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) at the earliest opportunity.

The proposed agreement is expected to support efforts to double bilateral trade by 2030 by expanding commercial engagement and creating opportunities for businesses in both countries.

The leaders also welcomed the Team Canada Trade Mission to India, led by Canadian Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu, as well as Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand’s visit to New Delhi to advance shared priorities.

Their discussions covered the effects of geopolitical instability on the Indo-Pacific region and the importance of reliable partners in the energy and agriculture sectors. Carney also thanked Modi for his efforts to seek a peaceful resolution to Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Both leaders agreed to remain in close contact ahead of the Indian Prime Minister’s December visit.

Canadian Foreign Minister Meets Modi, Jaishankar

Earlier on Wednesday, Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand met Modi and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in New Delhi. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, security, energy, technology and people-to-people exchanges.

Following her meeting with Modi, Anand said India and Canada had considerable potential to build a prosperous future together. She also highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation in trade, investment and security.

Anand noted that nearly 80 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries had been supported by longstanding connections among families, students and entrepreneurs.

In a separate post on X, she reflected on the progress made since her meeting with Jaishankar in New Delhi a year earlier, particularly in trade negotiations and cooperation in energy, innovation and security.

She said closer engagement between the two countries could contribute to a more prosperous future and a free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

Team Canada Trade Mission Seeks Business Opportunities

Meanwhile, Canadian International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu is leading a delegation of approximately 300 business representatives to India as part of the Team Canada Trade Mission.

The delegation is exploring commercial opportunities across key sectors, with both countries seeking to expand trade and investment through closer business engagement.

The renewed diplomatic outreach, trade mission and ongoing CEPA negotiations form part of broader efforts by New Delhi and Ottawa to strengthen their economic partnership and deliver concrete outcomes ahead of Modi’s scheduled visit to Canada in December.
