Chandigarh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over ₹4,700 crore in Chandigarh before leaving for Punjab as part of his day-long visit to the region.

The projects focus on healthcare, education, road connectivity and urban infrastructure, with the Prime Minister stating that Chandigarh’s development would also benefit neighbouring states including Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

New MBBS College Approved for Chandigarh

During his address, Prime Minister Modi announced that a new MBBS college has been approved for Chandigarh and that academic sessions will begin soon.

He also inaugurated new hostels at Punjab Engineering College (PEC) and Government College, Sector 46, saying the city is emerging as a hub for education, research and future technologies such as artificial intelligence and semiconductors.

Congress MP from Chandigarh Manish Tewari was also present on the stage during the event. After the programme, the Prime Minister greeted and briefly interacted with the Congress leader before departing.

Healthcare and Connectivity Projects Unveiled

The Prime Minister inaugurated the 300-bed Advanced Mother and Child Centre and the Advanced Neurosciences Centre at PGIMER, besides laying the foundation stone for a 150-bed Critical Care Block under the Pradhan Mantri Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission.

He also inaugurated the IT City–Kurali Greenfield Highway and laid the foundation stone for the PR-7 spur of the Ambala–Chandigarh Greenfield Highway, aimed at improving regional connectivity and reducing traffic congestion.

PM Departs for Punjab

After completing his engagements in Chandigarh, Prime Minister Modi left for Jalandhar, Punjab, where he is scheduled to inaugurate 75 redeveloped railway stations under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, launch railway and road infrastructure projects, address a public rally, and interact with representatives of prominent religious deras.

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered train from Jind, Haryana, before arriving in Chandigarh for the inauguration of development projects.
