PM Modi to inaugurate redeveloped 524-year-old Tripura Sundari temple on Sep 22

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate the newly redeveloped Tripura Sundari temple, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, in Udaipur, southern Tripura, on September 22, officials said on Sunday.

A senior Tripura government official noted that the date remains tentative, as the Prime Minister’s schedule is yet to be finalised. “Senior officials, including Director General of Police Anurag, on Saturday visited Gomati district headquarters in Udaipur to supervise the possible arrangements for the Prime Minister’s visit. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, accompanied by other ministers, is likely to visit on Sunday or Monday to oversee the probable arrangements for PM Modi’s visit and inauguration of the temple,” the official told IANS.

Historic Temple Redeveloped Under PRASHAD Scheme

The Chief Minister had earlier invited the Prime Minister to inaugurate the redeveloped shrine, located 65 km south of Agartala. Under the Union Tourism Ministry’s PRASHAD (Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive) scheme, the 524-year-old temple has been redeveloped at a cost of over ₹52 crore, with the Tripura government contributing an additional ₹7 crore.

The temple, built in 1501 by Maharaja Dhanya Manikya, holds immense cultural and spiritual significance. It is the third Shakti Peetha in eastern India after the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata and the Kamakhya Temple in Guwahati.

Cultural Heritage and Historical Significance

At the end of a 517-year rule by successive kings, Tripura merged with India on October 15, 1949, through an agreement between regent Maharani Kanchan Prabha Devi and the Indian Governor General. The temple has since remained a symbol of Tripura’s deep-rooted spiritual traditions.

51 Shakti Peethas Park to Boost Religious Tourism

The official further revealed that the Union Tourism Ministry has sanctioned ₹97.70 crore to develop a 51 Shakti Peethas Park in Banduar, located just 4 km from the temple. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha laid its foundation stone and performed the Bhumi Pujan on July 13.

Planned as a unique religious tourism attraction, the park will feature replicas of all 51 Shakti Peeth temples from across the Indian subcontinent. Amenities will include a food court, souvenir shop, drinking water facilities, well-built roads with parking, public conveniences, guest accommodations, landscaped gardens, mythology museums, and entertainment zones.
