Ahead of Somnath Visit, PM Modi Pays Tribute to Those Who Restored Temple’s Glory

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, ahead of his visit to the Somnath Temple in Gujarat on May 11, paid tribute to all those who protected and restored the temple through centuries of challenges and invasions. Sharing his thoughts in an OpEd titled “Somnath and Bharat’s unconquerable spirit,” the Prime Minister said the temple symbolizes the resilience and continuity of Indian civilisation.

PM Modi stated that May 11 marks 75 years since the restored Somnath Temple was inaugurated by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. He described it as a journey “from ruin to renewal” and said Somnath continues to inspire generations with its message of strength and revival.

The Prime Minister said the temple and the sea surrounding it remind people that no matter how difficult the circumstances may be, the spirit of the nation can never be defeated. He also recalled the contributions of several rulers, saints, and leaders who helped preserve and rebuild Somnath over centuries.

PM Modi especially remembered Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s efforts in rebuilding the temple after Independence. He noted that Patel had called upon the people of India in 1947 to support the reconstruction of Somnath, describing it as a sacred national task.

The Prime Minister also praised the role of K.M. Munshi, the Jam Saheb of Nawanagar, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad in restoring the temple’s glory despite political opposition at the time.

Highlighting the government’s approach of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi,” PM Modi said several major spiritual centres across the country, including Kashi, Kedarnath, Ayodhya, Ujjain, and Somnath, have been developed while preserving their cultural and traditional identity.

He further announced that special pujas will be held at Somnath for the next 1,000 days in memory of the courage and sacrifices associated with the temple’s history. PM Modi urged people across the country to visit Somnath and experience what he described as Bharat’s “unbroken and unconquerable spirit.”
