New Delhi: Senior IPS officer Praveen Sood has been granted a one-year extension as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation beyond May 24, 2026, following approval by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

An official order confirming the extension was issued on Wednesday.

The decision was taken after a high-level selection committee meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reflecting the Union government’s confidence in Sood’s leadership of the country’s premier investigative agency.

Focus on Continuity in Key Investigations

Officials said the extension was aimed at ensuring continuity and stability within the CBI at a time when the agency is handling several sensitive and high-profile investigations.

According to sources familiar with the development, maintaining experienced leadership was considered important to sustain momentum in ongoing probes involving corruption, financial fraud, and organised crime.
