President Draupadi Murmu to Visit Amritsar Today for GNDU’s 50th Convocation

Amritsar: President Draupadi Murmu is visiting Amritsar today. She will attend the 50th convocation of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) as the chief guest. She will confer degrees to meritorious students. Tight security arrangements have been made in Amritsar in anticipation of her arrival.

In view of the President’s visit, Punjab Police and district administrations have called in over 2,500 additional police personnel from Amritsar, as well as Gurdaspur, Jalandhar, Tarn Taran, and Ludhiana. The entire city is on high alert.

An alert has also been issued along the border areas. Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, MP Bikram Sahni, and MP Gurjeet Singh Aujla will accompany the President at the Amritsar event.

Preparations begin in the university auditorium

Preparations for the convocation have begun in the university auditorium. The university is awaiting all the guests, including the President. Students who will receive their degrees have also arrived for the ceremony. Dog squads and bomb squads are conducting intensive checks at hotels, railway stations, bus stands, and the airport. Policemen in plain clothes are also deployed inside and outside the university campus.

Draupadi Murmu will be the third President to visit Guru Nanak Dev University in its 56-year history. Previously, V.V. Giri laid the university’s foundation stone in 1969. Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam visited on August 31, 2004, to inaugurate the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Study Centre.

This was his second visit to Amritsar after becoming President.

This is Draupadi Murmu’s second visit to Amritsar as President. She previously paid obeisance at the Sri Harmandir Sahib in 2023. The President is on a two-day visit to Punjab. Following today’s program in Amritsar, she will distribute degrees to 1,452 students at the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT) in Jalandhar on Friday.
