Punjab Assembly’s special session on MNREGA today: 9 reports to be presented

The Punjab government has convened a special session of the Legislative Assembly today, Tuesday, to discuss the central government’s renaming of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme. The central government has renamed the scheme “Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Employment and Livelihood Mission (Rural) (VB-GRAM-G),” a move that is being described as ‘anti-poor’ by the opposition parties.

During this special session, a demand will be made to withdraw the amendments made to the MNREGA Act. A resolution against the central government will also be introduced. However, there will be no Question Hour or Zero Hour during this session.

The session will begin promptly at 11:00 AM. It will be presided over by Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan. The session is expected to be stormy, with the opposition likely to corner the government on several issues, including law and order.

Tributes to be paid to the four Sahibzadas

At the beginning of the session, tributes will be paid to the unparalleled martyrdom of the four Sahibzadas of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Following this, tributes will be paid to former Punjab Governor Shivraj Chauhan, former Minister Jagtar Singh Multani, former Minister of State Tara Singh Ladal, and former MLA Tarlochan Singh Sundh, all of whom passed away recently. Nine reports will be presented in the House.
