Punjab BJP Slams AAP Govt for Passing Nine Bills in Single Day, Calls It ‘Insult to Democracy’

Chandigarh: Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon on Monday criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for introducing and passing nearly nine Bills on the final day of the Assembly session, calling it an insult to the legislative system and democracy.

BJP Questions Rush to Pass Nine Bills

Dhillon said Bills that could have far-reaching consequences for the people were passed without giving legislators adequate time to read, understand, scrutinise and deliberate on them.

He said the Assembly’s role was not to blindly approve every decision brought by the government but to ensure detailed discussion and scrutiny of every Bill in the public interest.

Dhillon questioned how legislators could properly read, understand and discuss nine Bills that were introduced and passed on the same day, while also consulting people in their constituencies.

Dhillon Accuses AAP of Bypassing Scrutiny

The Punjab BJP chief said the Legislative Assembly was the voice of the people and should not function as a “rubber stamp” for decisions taken by the government.

He alleged that under the AAP government, important decisions were being taken in Delhi while their implementation was being carried out in Punjab.

Dhillon said legislators had the right to be fully informed about and deliberate on laws concerning the state rather than being expected to approve Bills without adequate time to study them.

BJP Raises Guru Granth Sahib Bill Issue

Referring to the Jagat Jyot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Act, Dhillon said the AAP government had previously attempted to rush through important legislation.

He recalled that government ministers and legislators had later admitted at the Akal Takht that they had given their consent to the legislation without fully reading or understanding it.

Dhillon said instead of learning from that episode, the AAP government had turned the practice of rushing legislation into its method of functioning.

He said bringing a series of Bills on the final day of the Assembly session and passing them without adequate discussion undermined the rights of the Opposition as well as the public’s right to know and understand the laws being enacted.
