Punjab, Chandigarh Under Yellow Alert as Monsoon Turns Active; Rain Likely in Several Areas

Chandigarh: Punjab and Chandigarh are under a yellow alert for rain on Saturday. According to the Meteorological Department, rainfall is likely at isolated places in Pathankot and Rupnagar, while Chandigarh is expected to remain cloudy with chances of one or two spells of rain or thunderstorms.

Due to recent rainfall, Punjab’s average maximum temperature has dropped by 3.3 degrees Celsius, although temperatures remain close to normal. Ferozepur recorded the highest temperature in the state at 34.9 degrees Celsius.

Rainfall Recorded Across Several Districts

Several districts in Punjab received rainfall on August 14. According to weather centre data, Rauni in Patiala recorded the highest rainfall at 35 mm.

Patiala received 28.8 mm of rain, followed by Ludhiana with 25 mm and Ludhiana AWS with 11.5 mm. Thein Dam recorded 5 mm, KVK Pathankot 3 mm, Bathinda 1.5 mm, Chandigarh 0.8 mm and Gurdaspur 0.5 mm of rainfall.

Monsoon Trough Active Over Punjab and Chandigarh

The monsoon trough line is active over Punjab and Chandigarh and extends from Ferozepur towards Jharkhand and West Bengal. Under its influence, cloudy skies and thunderstorms accompanied by rain are likely at some places across Punjab and Chandigarh.

A western disturbance is also active in the upper atmosphere, which is expected to bring changes in weather conditions and increase the chances of rainfall.

Punjab’s Power Demand Reaches 13,203 MW

Punjab’s power demand stood at 13,203 MW on Saturday morning. The state recorded a total power generation of 4,209 MW, while 8,995 MW of electricity was drawn from the grid.

The power drawn from the grid was 393 MW lower than the scheduled requirement of 9,388 MW.

Bhakra and Pong Dams Remain Below Maximum Levels

The water level at Bhakra Dam stood at 1,620.17 feet, which is 59.83 feet below its maximum level of 1,680 feet. The dam is receiving an inflow of 44,394 cusecs, while 26,234 cusecs of water are being released.

Meanwhile, Pong Dam’s water level stood at 1,353.41 feet, 36.59 feet below its maximum level of 1,390 feet. The dam is receiving an inflow of 29,142 cusecs, while 15,840 cusecs of water are being released.

Both dams are currently below their danger levels.
