Punjab Monsoon Weakens; Rainfall 23% Below Normal, Yellow Alert for Three Districts

Chandigarh: The southwest monsoon is gradually weakening across Punjab, with rainfall activity expected to decline from Monday, according to the latest forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

While light to moderate rain is likely in several districts of north and central Punjab on Sunday, most districts in the south-western region are expected to witness relatively dry weather over the next few days.

Punjab records 23% rainfall deficit

According to IMD data, Punjab should have received 104.1 mm of rainfall between June 1 and July 11 during the current monsoon season. However, the state has recorded only 79.7 mm of rainfall so far, leaving it with a 23 per cent rainfall deficit.

Due to the significant shortfall, Punjab has been placed in the red category based on rainfall conditions. In contrast, neighbouring states have received normal or above-normal rainfall during the same period.

Yellow alert issued for three districts

The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Pathankot, Hoshiarpur and Rupnagar, where rainfall activity is expected to be the highest on Sunday.

Light to moderate rain is also likely at isolated places in Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala.

Dry spell likely from Monday

The IMD has forecast that rainfall activity across Punjab is likely to reduce from Monday onwards, with most south-western districts expected to experience relatively dry weather.

Authorities have advised residents to stay updated with the latest weather advisories, especially in districts under the yellow alert, as intermittent rain may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas.
