Panchayat Samiti-Zila Parishad elections in Punjab by December

Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections in Punjab will now be held by December 5th, instead of the original date of October 5th. These elections were delayed due to floods in the state. The Managing Secretary of Rural Development issued a notification stating that the Panchayat Samiti and Zila Parishad elections will be held by December 5th. Elections for 23 Zila Parishads and 154 Block Samitis in the state have been pending for a long time. These elections were last held in 2018.

The process of creating zones has been completed.

The government had previously completed preparations for the Samiti and Zila Parishad elections in August. Zones were created for these elections, and the process of reserving constituencies was also completed. The government had previously issued a notification on August 10, 2023, deciding to hold the Panchayat elections by December 31st and the Samiti and Zila Parishad elections by November 25th.

However, after the matter went to the High Court, this notification was rescinded. Subsequently, the government completed the Panchayat elections, but the Samiti and Zila Parishad elections remained pending. A copy of the notification issued today will be submitted to the court at the next hearing regarding the elections.

A three-month extension was initially sought.

When the matter first reached the High Court, the government submitted an affidavit promising to hold elections by May 31st. The government then began the process of reorganizing the blocks and, citing this work, secured an additional three months’ extension. Furthermore, the government was also told to hold elections by October 5th.
