Heavy Rain in Chandigarh, Pathankot; 4 Trains Cancelled, Punjab on Alert

Chandigarh: Heavy rain lashed Chandigarh and Pathankot on Friday morning as the Meteorological Department forecast rainfall across Punjab and Chandigarh until August 19. The Chandigarh Meteorological Centre has issued a Yellow Alert, with isolated heavy rainfall likely in parts of the state.

Punjab’s maximum temperature rose by 0.7°C on Thursday and remained 2.7°C above normal. Patiala recorded the highest maximum temperature in the state at 37.2°C.

According to the weather department, rain is likely in all districts of Punjab on Friday. Pathankot, Hoshiarpur and Rupnagar may receive isolated heavy rainfall, while light to moderate rain is expected at several other places.

Rain forecast across Punjab

Light to moderate rainfall is likely at some places in Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Sangrur, Fatehgarh Sahib and Patiala.

One or two places in Ferozepur, Fazilka, Faridkot, Muktsar, Moga, Bathinda, Barnala and Mansa may also receive light to moderate rain.

The prevailing weather conditions are linked to the monsoon trough, which is passing through several parts of North India. A low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal may also influence weather conditions in Punjab and Chandigarh.

Cloudy skies and light to moderate rainfall are expected in several areas. Some places may also experience strong winds and thunderstorms. An active Western Disturbance is also affecting the region.

Four trains cancelled after landslides

Train services have been disrupted in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra region following heavy rainfall and landslides that caused stones and debris to fall on railway tracks.

Railway authorities have cancelled four services operating on the Pathankot-Baijnath Paprola section until further notice. The affected trains are 52467, 52470, 52474 and 52465.

Train number 52464, which normally operates between Baijnath Paprola and Jawalamukhi Road, will operate only up to Koparlahar railway station.

Similarly, train number 52469 will originate from Koparlahar instead of Jawalamukhi Road.

Officials of the Jammu Division said restoration and repair work on the affected railway tracks is being carried out on a war footing.

Dam water levels rise, remain below danger mark

Water levels in both the Bhakra and Pong dams have increased due to higher inflows, although they remain below their respective danger marks.

At Bhakra Dam, the water level stood at 1,617.88 feet, with an inflow of 48,548 cusecs and an outflow of 25,150 cusecs.

At Pong Dam, the water level was recorded at 1,352.37 feet, while the inflow stood at 52,326 cusecs and the outflow at 15,507 cusecs.

The normal maximum level is 1,680 feet for Bhakra Dam and 1,390 feet for Pong Dam. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as water levels continue to rise, though there is currently no immediate danger.

Punjab power demand crosses 13,900 MW

Punjab’s electricity demand reached 13,915 MW on the night of August 13.

Of the total demand, 8,808 MW was sourced from outside the state, while 5,109 MW was generated within Punjab.

Against a scheduled requirement of 8,298 MW, an additional 510 MW had to be procured to meet the increased demand. Grid frequency remained at 49.95 Hz during the period.

With rainfall expected to continue over the coming days, authorities are monitoring weather conditions, railway operations and water levels in major dams across the region.
