Chandigarh: Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar has alleged that the investigation into the death of a Punjab State Warehousing Corporation official is being “weakened,” intensifying the political row surrounding the high-profile case.
Reacting to recent developments, Jakhar claimed that the state government is attempting to dilute the case linked to the death of warehousing official Gagandeep Singh Randhawa. He alleged that the investigation is not being conducted in a fair and transparent manner, raising concerns about possible political interference.
The BJP leader accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government of failing to ensure justice for the victim’s family and allowing the case to lose momentum.
Gagandeep Singh Randhawa, a district manager with the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation in Amritsar, allegedly died by suicide in March 2026. Before his death, he reportedly recorded a video accusing former Punjab minister Laljit Singh Bhullar of harassment related to a warehouse tender.
Following the incident, Bhullar resigned from the state cabinet and was later arrested on charges including abetment of suicide.
The case quickly escalated into a major political controversy, with opposition parties demanding a high-level probe.
Jakhar reiterated the BJP’s demand for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe, arguing that only an independent agency can ensure a fair inquiry. He alleged that the state police’s handling of the case raises doubts about impartiality.
Earlier, BJP leaders had also approached the Punjab Governor seeking a CBI investigation, claiming the case reflects “abuse of power” and administrative failure.
Jakhar warned that if the demand for an independent probe is ignored, the party could launch protests across the state.
Adding to the controversy, the victim’s family has expressed concerns over their safety and alleged attempts at intimidation. Jakhar supported these claims, stating that such actions further undermine confidence in the investigation process.
The family has been demanding strict action against all accused and has also sought a transparent probe into the circumstances leading to Randhawa’s death.
The Punjab government, however, has rejected allegations of any wrongdoing in the probe. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has maintained that the state police is capable of conducting a fair investigation and that no accused will be spared.
The government has also stated that necessary action, including the arrest of the former minister, has already been taken, highlighting its commitment to accountability.
The case has become a major flashpoint in Punjab politics, with opposition parties accusing the government of shielding influential individuals, while the ruling party has accused the opposition of politicising a sensitive issue.
The controversy has also brought attention to alleged irregularities in the warehousing tender process and the broader issue of governance and accountability in the state.
