Jalandhar: On the viral video of Charanjit Singh Channi and Bibi Jagir Kaur, the latter has come forward and clarified the air. Coming in support of Charanjit Singh Channi, Bibi Jagir Kaur said that his gesture was out of respect and there was nothing indecent or inappropriate.
The former MLA from Bholath and SGPC president took to social media platform X. She said that the context in which the video is being circulated is wrong and is being mispresented.
Taking to X, She said, “On 10th May 2024, we were returning after filing the nomination papers of Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Mr. Mohinder Singh KP when the former Chief Minister of Punjab Mr.Charanjit Singh Channi came there to file the papers with his family and senior Congress leaders. All the leaders greeted with great respect and dignity.”
She added that, “Charanjit Singh Channi bowed to me and while bowing he held both my hands and touched his forehead respectfully. In this happy and respectful atmosphere, Channi touched my chin.” Bibi Jagir Kaur termed the whole gesture as respectful and supported Charanjit Singh Channi.
Terming the circulation of a small clip as mischevious and painful, she said, “But it is sad that other people on social media and various channels made the video viral, from which some portion of the video was cut and the rest of the clip was played to extreme level..cutting this part of the video and playing only a selected portion is mischievous and it is very painful for me, my family and my well wishers.”
Women Commission Seeks Report
Taking suo moto cognizance of the matter, Punjab Women Commission yesterday sought report from the DGP in the matter. Terming the incident as indecent behaviour with Bibi Jagir Kaur, Commission has demanded report from the DGP by today 2 pm.
Bibi Jagir Kaur as my elder sister: Channi
After the video went viral, Charanjit Channi reacted and clarified that he considered Bibi Jagir Kaur as his elder sister and the gesture of first bowing down and touching the chin was out of affection and respect. The video went viral in which Channi first greeted Jagir Kaur and later and later touched her chin. In the video, Bibi Jagir Kaur can be seen shrugging it off.
Vikramjit Chaudhary writes to SGPC, seeks action against Channi
On one hand, Bibi Jagir Kaur has clarified her stand on viral video and defended Charanjit Singh Channi. On the other hand, Congress MLA from Phillaur Vikramjit Chaudhary has written a letter to Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak committee and sought action against Channi.
In a post on X tagging SGPC Amritsar, he said, “My letter to Hon’ble Singh Sahib Giani Raghbir Singh Ji, Jathedar Sahib, Sri Akal Takht Sahib regarding Congress candidate S. Charanjit Singh Channi Ji’s public misconduct towards former president of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee Bibi Jagir Kaur Ji @SGPCAmritsar“
Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary demanded appropriate action against Channi for hurting the religious sentiments of Sikh Community. It should be noted that Congress party has suspended Phillaur MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary from the party for allegedly indulging in anti-party activities.
