Bikram Majithia moves Court Seeking Barrack Change in Jail, Hearing Scheduled Today in Mohali Court

On Friday, the court had issued a notice to the Punjab government, directing it to file a response by today.

In a case involving disproportionate assets, senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who is lodged in New Nabha Jail, has filed a petition in court seeking a change of barrack within the jail. The petition is scheduled for a hearing today (July 14) in the Mohali district court.

On Friday, the court had issued a notice to the Punjab government, directing it to file a response by today.

In the petition filed on behalf of Majithia, his lawyers have said that he has been an MLA and a former minister and hence he should get the facilities under the Orange category, in which he should be kept separate from other under-trial or convicted prisoners.

The lawyers have also asked the court for a copy of the grounds of arrest of Majithia. Along with this, a copy of the jail manual has also been attached to the petition, so that it can be proved in which category Majithia should be kept.

However, the jail administration says that adequate steps have been taken for Majithia’s security. CCTV cameras have been installed in his barrack so that surveillance can be done.
