Two passengers arrest with important cigarettes at Amritsar airport

Goods worth Rs 10 lakh were recovered; both smugglers had come from Sharjah. 

Amritsar: Important cigarettes have been recovered from two passengers at Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji International Airport, Amritsar. The market value of the cigarettes is close to Rs 10 lakh. At present, the matter is being investigated. The smuggled cigarettes have been seized.

Based on APIS profiling at Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji International Airport, Amritsar, officials of AIU, Customs (Preventive) Commissionerate, Amritsar intercepted 2 passengers. The passengers arrived at SGRD International Airport Amritsar from Sharjah on 29.07.2024 by IndiGo flight Based on suspicion, their luggage as well as their search was conducted. As a result, 30 thousand cigarette sticks were recovered from each passenger and the total value was Rs 10.20 lakh.

The smuggled cigarettes were seized on 29.07.2024 under the relevant provisions of the Customs Act of 1962. Further investigation is being carried out by the authorities.

Cigarettes worth Rs 19.21 lakh were also seized at Amritsar airport on 26 April 2024. Air Asia flight number D-7188, flying from Malaysia on 26 April, reached Amritsar’s SGRD airport. When the luggage of four passengers who arrived in India on this flight was scanned, some suspicious packets were found in them. Earlier, on 7 March 2023, packets of cigarettes worth Rs 29.5 lakh were seized.
