Putin announces support for Iran amid escalating conflict, congratulates Mojtaba Khamenei for appointment

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reaffirmed Russia’s unwavering support for Iran amid its escalating conflict with the United States and Israel, while extending congratulations to Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as the country’s new Supreme Leader.

In a message conveyed through the Kremlin, Putin expressed solidarity with Tehran, stating, “I would like to reaffirm our unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends.”

He emphasized that Russia remains a reliable partner to Iran during this challenging period. Putin specifically congratulated Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in recent US-Israeli airstrikes on his election by Iran’s Assembly of Experts as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

Putin expressed confidence that Mojtaba would continue his father’s legacy “with honour,” unite the Iranian people in the face of severe trials, and demonstrate great courage and dedication while confronting armed aggression.

The leadership transition follows the death of Ali Khamenei and comes as Iran faces ongoing regional hostilities, with hardliners maintaining firm control. Putin had earlier conveyed condolences to Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian over the losses, including Khamenei, his family members, political and military figures, and civilians.

This development underscores the strengthening Russia-Iran alliance amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
