Railways Revamp JDCE Pattern: Single CBT to Make Promotions Tougher

Haryana: The pattern of the General Departmental Competitive Examination (JDCE) for railway employees awaiting promotion has been completely changed. The Railway Board has issued new guidelines revising the exam structure and syllabus. With the new rules in place, the exam is now considered more challenging and competitive than before.

    Single-Stage CBT for Key Posts

According to the order issued by Railway Board Deputy Director Ajay Goyal, only one stage Computer Based Test (CBT) will now be conducted for Group ‘C’ and non-Group ‘C’ posts including Technician, Junior Engineer (JE) and Paramedical.

This examination will be at par with the second stage of direct recruitment of Railway Recruitment Board (RRB), making the selection process more stringent and transparent.

The rules for the post of Assistant Loco Pilot have also changed.

Major Changes for ALP and Technical Roles

The most significant changes have been made for Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) and other technical positions. A clear and rigorous examination structure has now been established for these positions. The exam will be for 100 marks, with 100 questions, and candidates will have 120 minutes to complete.

Negative marking of one-third marks will be applicable for every wrong answer, which may cause loss if answered carelessly.

    Balanced Question Paper Across Subjects

These questions will appear in the question paper

The question paper will include questions from mathematics, general intelligence, basic science, engineering, and trade-specific subjects in approximately equal proportions. This will require candidates to have a strong grasp of each subject. Merit will now be determined by a single stage of the exam. Negative marking will reduce the margin for error.

Impact on Railway Hubs in Haryana

Major railway centres in 5 districts of Haryana

The implementation of the new pattern for GDCE recruitment by the Railways will directly impact thousands of employees working at major railway centers in Haryana, such as Ambala, Yamunanagar, Panipat, Rohtak, and Hisar. Promotions will now be determined by a single, rigorous examination, which will increase competition and heighten the pressure to prepare.

    Five Key Impacts on Employees
5 possible major impacts on Haryana

    1. Promotion process to be expedited: The examination which was earlier conducted in multiple stages will now be completed in a single stage, thereby expediting the long pending promotions in Ambala and adjoining divisions.
    2. Pressure to prepare will increase on employees: Since merit will be decided through a single exam, employees will now have to prepare more deeply for mathematics, reasoning and technical subjects.
    3. Competition will increase, selection will be difficult: The number of employees in big railway stations and workshops of Haryana is high, hence the competition for limited posts will become tougher than before.
    4. Young employees can benefit: Employees who are comfortable with new technology and computer-based examinations can relatively benefit from this new pattern.
    5. Demand for training and coaching will increase: Demand for railway exam preparation institutes and departmental training is likely to increase in Ambala and surrounding areas
