Ramgarh farmers instructed on balanced fertilizer use, encouraged to adopt organic alternatives; tomato and capsicum saplings distributed

Almora: The Vivekananda Institute of Hill Agriculture (VIHA), Almora, organized an awareness program regarding the balanced use of fertilizers in Darima village, located in the Ramgarh region. Fifteen farmers participated in the farmers’ workshop, comprising 14 men and one woman.

During the program, scientists provided the farmers with detailed information regarding the detrimental effects of the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. They explained that the continuous and unbalanced application of fertilizers compromises soil quality and negatively impacts crop productivity. Farmers were advised to adopt Integrated Nutrient Management (INM) practices to maintain soil health.

Advice Given to Adopt Organic Farming

The institute’s team educated the farmers on the use of alternative nutrient sources, such as farmyard manure, vermicompost, and bio-fertilizers. The scientists stated that utilizing natural sources can help reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers. This approach lowers cultivation costs and ensures the long-term sustainability of soil fertility.

Raised Awareness on Soil Testing Importance

During the workshop, farmers were advised to conduct regular soil testing. The scientists explained that soil testing provides accurate information regarding the nutrients available in the field. Based on these results, farmers can apply fertilizers precisely according to specific requirements, thereby enhancing both the quality and yield of their crops.

    Vegetable Seedlings Distributed to Farmers

At the conclusion of the program, seedlings of tomatoes and capsicum were distributed to the farmers. During this session, the scientists also discussed the importance of balanced nutrition and the application of modern techniques in vegetable cultivation. The entire program was coordinated by Dr. Kamini Bisht and Dr. Mahendra Singh Bhinda.
