New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Saturday alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi replaced the Delhi Police Commissioner to facilitate the arrest of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk ahead of his proposed Parliament march on July 20.

The allegation came a day after the Ministry of Home Affairs appointed senior IPS officer Anurag Kumar as the new Delhi Police Commissioner, replacing Satish Golcha. Singh linked the administrative change to the police action taken against Wangchuk, who was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital after completing 21 days of his hunger strike.

Sanjay Singh levels allegations against Centre

In a video statement, Singh claimed that 59-year-old Wangchuk had been fasting to highlight the concerns of students allegedly affected by examination paper leaks, including the NEET controversy.

He alleged that the Prime Minister anticipated a larger public movement ahead of Wangchuk’s proposed march to Parliament on July 20 and therefore changed the Delhi Police leadership. Singh further claimed that Wangchuk was forcibly removed from Jantar Mantar and that no representative of the Centre had spoken to the activist during his prolonged fast.

Singh also alleged that CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke had been detained and appealed to students and youth across the country to support Wangchuk’s movement.

Police cite medical advice and High Court directions

Delhi Police, however, said Wangchuk was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital in compliance with the Delhi High Court’s directions and on the advice of medical experts due to his deteriorating health.

According to police, protesters attempted to obstruct the transfer, leading to a brief commotion, but officers exercised maximum restraint during the operation. Officials later confirmed that Wangchuk is conscious, his vital signs are stable, and he remains under medical supervision in the hospital’s emergency ward.

Opposition criticises police action

The police action triggered criticism from several Opposition leaders. Besides Sanjay Singh, AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Saurabh Bharadwaj accused the government of suppressing peaceful protests. Samajwadi Party spokesperson Ashutosh Verma, Trinamool Congress leader Sagarika Ghose, and Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav also questioned the government’s handling of the protest.

Meanwhile, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke alleged that Wangchuk was forcibly removed from the protest site and said the organisation would continue its agitation and proceed with the proposed march to Parliament on July 20. Delhi Police has not issued any official response to the allegations made by Dipke regarding the use of force.
