Punjab BJP In-Charge Satish Poonia Targets Congress Over 1984 Riots, Says AAP Failed to Keep Promises

Jalandhar: The Punjab unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) held a state-level meeting in Jalandhar on Tuesday as part of its preparations for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with newly appointed state in-charge Satish Poonia addressing party leaders and workers.

Poonia said the BJP is working on its organisational strategy under ‘Mission Punjab’ and aims to form the next government in the state by relying on its organisational strength, ideology and support from the people.

He also reiterated that the BJP will contest all 117 Assembly seats independently in the 2027 elections.

Poonia targets AAP and Congress

Speaking to reporters, Poonia alleged that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) lacks a clear political ideology and vision for Punjab and has failed to fulfil promises made to the people.

He also accused the Congress of being responsible for the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, reiterating the BJP’s position on the issue.

When asked about BJP MPs attending a condolence meeting for former Congress leader Sajjan Kumar, Poonia said the central leadership had taken action against the MPs. He maintained that the MPs had attended the programme in their personal capacity and not as representatives of the BJP.

BJP rules out alliance talks

Poonia said the BJP is currently holding meetings with party leaders and workers across Punjab as part of preparations for the upcoming Assembly elections.

He reiterated that the party plans to contest all 117 seats on its own and said the recent meetings should not be viewed as an indication of any move towards an alliance with another political party.

The BJP has been stepping up its organisational activities in Punjab ahead of the 2027 elections. Before Poonia’s visit, BJP leaders BL Santhosh and Shivraj Singh Chouhan had also visited the state.

‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’ in Punjab

Poonia also announced plans for the ‘Seva Sankalp Abhiyan’, under which the BJP will organise various service-oriented activities in Punjab.

According to Poonia, the campaign is scheduled to begin on September 17 and continue until October 17.

A workshop was held in Jalandhar with party leaders and workers to discuss the proposed activities and organisational initiatives.

Poonia highlights PM Modi’s public service

Poonia also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long public-service career, saying he has been serving the people for 25 years.

He referred to Modi’s tenure as Gujarat Chief Minister and subsequent years as Prime Minister, while highlighting welfare schemes launched by the Centre.

Poonia said various social service programmes will be organised to mark Modi’s 25 years of public service in 2026.

The Jalandhar meeting was part of the BJP’s broader organisational preparations and outreach ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections.
