The civic body’s action comes amid a wider investigation into the building collapse, with questions being raised over the construction and maintenance of the structure and how an allegedly illegal building was allowed to remain occupied.

Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi has warned that officials found responsible for allowing illegal constructions to come up will face strict action. He said accountability would be fixed and guilty officials could face stringent punishment, including immediate dismissal.
Five-storey PG building collapses in Satya Niketan
The five-storey building collapsed suddenly on Sunday afternoon in Satya Niketan, trapping several people under the rubble. The nearly three-decade-old structure was being used as a PG accommodation for students.
Officials estimated that 15 to 20 people could still be trapped under the debris as rescue operations continued into the night. Six people were confirmed dead, while multiple others were rescued and taken to hospitals.
The incident triggered a major rescue operation involving multiple agencies, with teams searching through the debris for survivors.
Mayor Pravesh Wahi said the civic administration had directed immediate action against illegal constructions and made it clear that those responsible for the Satya Niketan incident would not be spared.
10 injured taken to AIIMS trauma centre
The collapse also left several people injured. The AIIMS trauma centre received 10 injured people following the incident.
Rescue teams continued working at the site to locate anyone who could still be trapped beneath the debris. The operation remained focused on clearing the collapsed structure and ensuring that no survivors were left unaccounted for.
The death toll and number of people rescued could be subject to further updates as the search operation progresses.
Delhi Police books building owner and others
Delhi Police has registered a case against the building owner, identified as Hariram, and others in connection with the collapse.
The case was registered at South Campus Police Station under provisions relating to culpable homicide, negligence in maintaining a structure and endangering public safety.
Investigators are examining the role of the building owner and others, along with the condition of the structure and issues surrounding its construction and use.
The criminal probe comes alongside the MCD’s civic action and could determine whether negligence or violations contributed to the deadly collapse.
MCD orders sealing of illegal buildings above four floors
In the wake of the tragedy, the MCD has directed that illegal constructions exceeding four floors be sealed immediately.
The move is aimed at preventing potentially dangerous structures from remaining occupied and addressing safety concerns surrounding unauthorised construction in the national capital.
The civic body’s order also raises questions about enforcement and whether officials responsible for monitoring building violations failed to take timely action.
A notice issued by the Executive Engineer (Building)-II, South Zone, directed the owner or occupier of Property No. 82, Satya Niketan, New Delhi, to vacate the premises immediately.
According to the notice, the MCD found the premises occupied and described the property as being in a “ruinous/dangerous condition”. The civic body warned that the condition of the structure could pose a danger to people living or staying there, passers-by and residents of the surrounding neighbourhood.
Mayor Wahi has also warned that officials found responsible for permitting illegal structures will face stringent consequences.
The MCD’s latest crackdown is expected to put the spotlight on other potentially unsafe and unauthorised multi-storey structures across Delhi, particularly those being used for residential or PG accommodation.
