Mumbai: Indian equity markets opened higher on Friday, with the benchmark Sensex and Nifty gaining in early trade, supported by buying in IT stocks and positive signals from the domestic economy.
The Sensex rose 515 points, or 0.68 per cent, to 76,668, while the Nifty gained 51 points, or 0.22 per cent, to 23,925 in early trading.
Broader markets also traded in positive territory. The Nifty Midcap 100 gained 0.03 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 rose 0.49 per cent.
IT stocks lead sectoral gains
Among NSE sectoral indices, Nifty IT emerged as the top gainer, rising 0.65 per cent, followed by the realty index, which gained 0.50 per cent.
The Nifty Consumer Durables index was the biggest laggard, declining 0.50 per cent, while other sectoral indices traded mixed.
Market sentiment was supported by positive domestic economic indicators, including trends in GST collections, automobile sales and credit growth.
Global markets support Indian equities
Global cues were also largely positive. Asian markets traded higher, with Japan’s Nikkei rising 1.14 per cent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng gaining 2.09 per cent, South Korea’s Kospi adding 1.31 per cent, China’s Shanghai index advancing 0.35 per cent and Shenzhen rising 0.27 per cent.
US markets also ended higher in the previous session. The Nasdaq gained 1.4 per cent, the S&P 500 rose 1.06 per cent, and the Dow Jones advanced 1.18 per cent.
However, elevated bond yields and crude oil prices remained concerns for investors. Brent crude was trading near $96-$97 a barrel, while geopolitical tensions linked to the US-Iran conflict continued to influence market sentiment.
Nifty support at 23,800-23,850
Analysts placed immediate support for the Nifty in the 23,800-23,850 zone, with resistance expected around 24,050-24,100.
For Bank Nifty, immediate support was seen at 57,000-57,200, while resistance was placed at 57,800-58,000.
Meanwhile, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) remained net sellers on September 3, offloading equities worth Rs 2,346 crore. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), however, remained buyers, purchasing equities worth Rs 4,977 crore.
