New Delhi: The Indian stock market opened Friday’s session on a mixed note and moved lower in ealier trade as selling in several sectors weighed on the benchmark indices. IT shares continued to attract buying, offering some support a day after the Sensex and Nifty posted strong gains.
The Sensex initially opened 25.47 points higher at 74,341.08, while the Nifty 50 started at 23,065.10 up 67.75 points from its previous close. The mood changed as the session progressed. In the early-trade snapshot provided by the market report, the Sensex fell 221.89 points or 0.29% to 74,093 while the Nifty dropped 55.19 points or 0.24% to an intraday low of 22,942.
The decline followed Thursday’s sharp rally, when the Sensex climbed 1,533.72 points to close at 74,315.61 and the Nifty gained 374.65 points to finish at 22,997.35. Both indices had moved close to the key 23,000 mark.
IT Stocks Gain as Other Sectors Face Selling
IT shares were among the bright spots in Friday’s early session. Nifty IT, Nifty Media, Nifty PSU Bank and Nifty Metal rose by up to 1.59%, according to the supplied market update.
On the other hand, Nifty Oil and Gas, Nifty MidSmall IT and Telecom, and Nifty FMCG traded lower, with losses of up to 0.86%. Realty and auto stocks were also under pressure, while pharma, cement, healthcare and private banking indices saw modest declines.
The contrast comes after IT stocks helped drive Thursday’s rally. Better-than-expected quarterly results and encouraging management commentary have supported the sector, with market experts pointing to a roughly 9% recovery in the IT index.
What Is Driving the Market?
Analysts say Indian equities have performed strongly this week, with the Nifty 50 gaining 668 points over three sessions, according to the supplied report. Expectations around the upcoming Union Budget, including possible changes to long-term capital gains taxation, have also featured in market discussions.
Investors are now watching the next round of quarterly earnings for signs of whether the rally can continue. Results from telecom companies, banks, automakers and metal producers are expected to offer further clues about corporate performance.
Global conditions remain another important factor. Asian markets traded higher in early hours on Friday, following gains on Wall Street. The S&P 500 ended the previous US session 0.33% higher while the Nasdaq edged up 0.08%.
However, elevated US bond yields and crude oil prices remain concerns. Market experts cited in the report said foreign institutional investor selling could continue if the US 10-year bond yield stays above 5% and Brent crude remains above $100 per barrel. A stronger rupee and a fall in bond yields could help ease some of that pressure.
Nifty Levels Investors Are Watching
Analysts cited in the report maintained a near-term view of 23,200–23,600 for the Nifty, while flagging the possibility of a pullback after the previous session’s sharp rise.
They said the index could see buying interest on dips, provided it does not fall below 22,780. The 23,070 level was also identified as an important near-term reference point.
For investors, the focus remains on quarterly earnings, global market cues, crude oil prices and foreign fund flows. Friday’s early weakness comes after a strong rally, so the next moves in these factors could help determine whether the market consolidates or extends its recent recovery.
