Seven Killed in Badakhshan Road Crash as Afghanistan Sees Spike in Traffic Accidents

Kabul: In a tragic incident in northern Afghanistan’s Badakhshan province, seven people were killed and two others injured after a road accident early Tuesday morning, provincial police spokesman Ehsanullah Kamgar confirmed.

The crash occurred in the Maimay district of the mountainous Darwaz region. Authorities have not yet released further details about the cause of the accident.

Series of Fatal Mishaps Across Afghanistan

This is the latest in a string of traffic accidents reported across the country. Just last week, at least five people died and 44 were injured after a bus overturned in the Salang area of Baghlan province.

According to Mohammad Ashraf Haqshenas, spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Works (MoPW), the bus veered off the road due to reckless driving at around 2 a.m. on Saturday. Injured passengers were rushed to the Khanjan district health center.

Officials urged travelers to follow instructions and adhere to traffic rules, especially with snow-clearing operations ongoing along the Salang highway.

Authorities Warn of Rising Risks

On December 15, local police reported three deaths and 16 injuries in separate crashes in Ghazni and Jawzjan provinces.
A head-on collision on the Kabul–Kandahar highway claimed two lives and injured two women, while other road mishaps in Jawzjan left one dead and 14 injured.

Authorities have repeatedly cited reckless driving, vehicle overcrowding, and poorly maintained roads as major contributors to the rising death toll on Afghan highways.
