The name of Samajwadi Party (SP) Member of Parliament Mohibbullah Nadvi has surfaced in the ongoing investigation into the Turkman Gate violence that occurred during an anti-encroachment demolition drive near the Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque in Old Delhi. Delhi Police said it plans to question Nadvi as part of the probe.
The clashes earlier this week saw stone pelting and unrest when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) carried out a pre-dawn demolition of illegal structures on land adjoining the mosque and a graveyard, following a Delhi High Court order.
Mohibbullah Nadvi is a Samajwadi Party MP from the Rampur Lok Sabha constituency and an Islamic scholar who also serves as the imam of the Parliament Street Mosque in Delhi.
Police said they are examining CCTV footage and other evidence from the Turkman Gate incident, and Nadvi’s potential involvement or role in the unrest is under scrutiny as part of the broader investigation.
The demolition drive was aimed at removing unauthorized structures and encroachments around the historic mosque area. According to police, during the operation, a group of people pelleted stones at police and MCD personnel, resulting in minor injuries to several officers.
Authorities used tear gas to disperse the crowd and brought the situation back under control, with a FIR registered and multiple individuals detained in connection with the violence.
As part of the investigation, police are reviewing video evidence and witness statements to determine whether there was a pre-planned attempt to incite unrest during the demolition and whether political figures have any connection to it.
The fact that Nadvi’s name has come up in the probe underscores the sensitive political and communal dynamics surrounding the demolition and ensuing clashes in the Turkman Gate area.
