Steps Towards Indigenization of Indian Army

Since gaining independence and envisioning a new era of Indianization, the country has been working to erase the vestiges of colonial rule to bring this vision to fruition.

During a century and a half of British subjugation, India had become steeped in British cultural influences; we began imitating British ways in almost every aspect of life. Even the Indian Army—the pride of our nation—retained many symbols of that colonial legacy.

However, over the past 12 years, the Government of India has endeavored to eliminate these colonial traces from the Army. As part of this initiative, a recent decision was made that carrying a sword during formal Army parades would no longer be mandatory.

The ‘Army Uniform 2026’ manual has been revised, bringing about comprehensive changes to uniform and dress regulations.

Key Changes in Uniform & Terminology:
    1. The Army has decided to remove pouch belts from ‘Dress Number 5’ and ‘Dress Number 6’.
    2. The ‘Bandi’ jacket (a closed-collar waistcoat) has been designated as formal civilian-style attire within the 2026 uniform guidelines.
    3. Several other outdated symbols and terms have also been discarded; for instance, the use of colonial terms like ‘Royal’ has been discontinued in Army terminology.
    4. The overarching decision is to align the Army with India’s sovereign identity and national ethos.

    Guidelines for Personnel:
    1. Restrictions have been imposed on female soldiers regarding the use of lipstick, colored nail polish, “bindis”, and nose pins. While “sindoor” (vermilion) is permitted, it must not be visible outside the beret or cap.
    2. Certain old traditions and colonial practices—such as the pipe band—had already been phased out in 2023, and this process is now being carried forward.
    3. Regarding social attire, officers will now be permitted to wear a closed-collar “Bandi” jacket over a full-sleeved shirt, paired with plain-colored formal trousers and closed shoes.
    4. Changes have also been introduced to the new winter duty uniform. The existing jersey will replace the formal dress, and new guidelines have been issued regarding the appropriate attire for Army officers.

    Appearance & Conduct Restrictions:
    1. Restrictions have now been imposed on tattoos, body piercings, unauthorized beards, and unconventional hairstyles.
    2. Mustaches must not exceed 12 centimeters in length.
    3. The use of deodorants and perfumes while in uniform will also not be permitted.
