Sushila Karki assumes charge as Nepal’s PM, declares Gen Z protest victims as ‘martyrs’

Kathmandu: Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki formally took charge as Nepal’s interim Prime Minister on Sunday, two days after being sworn in by President Ramchandra Paudel.

She began her tenure by paying tribute at the Martyrs’ Memorial in Lainchaur before moving to Singha Durbar, where she commenced official duties from the Home Ministry building, as the main PMO complex was damaged in last week’s arson attack.

Relief for Gen Z Protest Victims

One of her first decisions was to recognise those killed during the Gen Z protests as “martyrs.”

Each victim’s family will receive Rs 1 million in compensation, while free medical care has been arranged for 134 injured protesters and 57 police personnel. The unrest has so far claimed 72 lives. Ministries have been directed to prepare detailed damage reports.

    Dissolution of Parliament

On Karki’s recommendation, the House of Representatives—elected in 2022—was dissolved on Friday night, fulfilling a key demand of the Gen Z movement, which accused lawmakers of corruption and inaction.

Elections are now scheduled for March 5, 2026.

    President Paudel’s Address

President Paudel defended the dissolution, calling it a “difficult but necessary” step to protect Nepal’s Constitution, parliamentary system, and federal democratic republic.

He described it as a “peaceful way-out” from a tense crisis.

    Political Backlash

The move has triggered sharp criticism, with eight political parties from the dissolved House issuing a joint statement condemning it as unconstitutional and against Article 76(7) of the Constitution.

They vowed not to accept what they termed a “dangerous precedent.”
