The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹11,718 crore budget for Census 2027, setting in motion India’s next nationwide demographic exercise. This will be the 16th Census of India and the first to be conducted fully in digital mode, marking a major shift from traditional paper-based enumeration. The decision was taken during a Cabinet meeting chaired.
