Taiwan Urged to Build Self-Deterrence Against China Threat

Washington, April 4: Taiwan must strengthen its “self-deterrence” capabilities to counter the increasing military and strategic pressure from China, according to a recent report. The recommendation comes amid rising tensions in the Asia-Pacific region and continued Chinese military activity near Taiwan.

    Need for Stronger Deterrence Strategy

The report emphasizes that Taiwan should focus on building internal defence strength to make any potential attack too costly and risky for China. This concept of self-deterrence involves enhancing military preparedness, civil defence and asymmetric warfare capabilities. Experts note that China continues to expand its military capabilities and conduct regular drills near Taiwan, signaling sustained pressure on the island.

Focus on Military and Civil Preparedness

Taiwan has already been taking steps to boost its defence, including increasing military spending and investing in advanced systems like missiles, submarines and air defence networks. The strategy also includes a “whole-of-society” approach, encouraging civilian preparedness and resilience in case of conflict.

    China Threat Remains Persistent

Despite assessments suggesting no immediate invasion timeline, China has not ruled out the use of force. Its continued military expansion and coercive tactics keep the threat level high. Analysts believe that strengthening deterrence is key to maintaining stability and preventing escalation in the region.
