Dehradun: The Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, has sustained massive damage after the Tamsa River, swollen by torrential rains and a cloudburst in Sahastradhara, inundated the premises. Several feet of sand and debris entered the complex, submerging the Shivling and causing deep cracks in the temple walls.
Officials confirmed that no casualties have been reported, but described the scale of destruction as severe.
Rising Waters Engulf First Floor
According to temple authorities, the water level began rising around 5:00 A.M., completely submerging the temple’s first floor.
“There has been huge damage. The entire temple is damaged. The Shivling is submerged under 3–4 feet of debris. The water started rising at around 5 A.M. and the situation escalated as the water level reached the first floor of the temple,” priest Rajpal Giri told IANS.
Locals said that although the Shivling remains intact, the rest of the temple has been devastated.
“Everything has been destroyed, except for the Shivling, which is indeed submerged in sand. All the chamber doors are blocked with water and sand. The water has risen, and 3–4 feet of sand or even more has entered the temple,” a local remarked.
Authorities have urged priests and nearby residents to stay away from the riverbank until conditions stabilize.
Cloudburst in Sahastradhara Triggers Destruction
The flash flood was triggered by a cloudburst late Monday night in the Kalighat area of Sahastradhara, a popular tourist destination in Dehradun. Heavy debris from the incident damaged two to three hotels and several shops in the main market.
Similar incidents of destruction were reported from Rishikesh and Haldwani, where swollen rivers and debris disrupted daily life.
Central and State Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to review the situation. Both leaders assured the state of full central assistance, with the Prime Minister noting that the Union government “stands firmly with Uttarakhand in this hour of disaster.”
Expressing gratitude, CM Dhami said, “With the guidance and cooperation of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister, relief work will be conducted more rapidly in the state.”
Relief Operations Underway
CM Dhami conducted a field inspection of the affected areas in Dehradun on Tuesday, accompanied by local MLAs and senior officials. He confirmed that the administration is on high alert, and that rescue and relief work is being carried out on a war footing.
Teams from the SDRF, NDRF, and the Public Works Department have been deployed. JCB machines and other heavy equipment are being used to clear debris and speed up relief operations.
