Two UAE Tankers Attacked While Transiting Strait of Hormuz: Report

Abu Dhabi: Two vessels belonging to Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) were attacked while transiting the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday evening, according to local authorities and media reports.

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned what it described as Iranian attacks and called on Tehran to immediately stop attacks on commercial shipping.

UAE condemns attacks, cites UN resolution

In a statement posted on social media, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attacks were a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which reaffirmed the importance of freedom of navigation and rejected the targeting of commercial vessels or attempts to obstruct international maritime routes.

The ministry said targeting commercial shipping and using the Strait of Hormuz as a means of economic coercion or blackmail amounted to acts of piracy by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

It also warned that such attacks pose a direct threat to regional stability, the people of the region and global energy security.

The UAE called on Iran to halt what it described as unprovoked attacks, commit to an immediate cessation of hostilities and ensure the complete and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

No injuries reported, situation under control

ADNOC confirmed that no injuries had been reported and said the situation had been brought under control, according to Xinhua, citing the official Emirates News Agency.

In its statement, ADNOC stressed the importance of protecting the safety and well-being of seafarers while ensuring freedom of navigation and maritime security.

The report did not provide details about the names of the two vessels, the nature of the attacks or the extent of any damage caused.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption to commercial shipping through the waterway can have wider implications for regional and global energy markets.
