US Sends Replacement Warship to Middle East Amid Reports of Sailors Jumping Off USS Abraham Lincoln

Washington: The United States is sending the aircraft carrier USS George Washington to the Middle East to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been deployed for more than 250 days amid military operations linked to the Iran conflict.

The move comes amid reports of mounting concerns over the prolonged deployment of sailors aboard the Lincoln, including reports that some sailors attempted to go overboard. US officials, however, have disputed some of the reports about conditions aboard the carrier.

USS Lincoln’s prolonged deployment raises concerns

The USS Abraham Lincoln has remained at sea for an unusually long period, with its deployment extending beyond the originally expected return date.

Reports citing sailors and family members have raised concerns about the strain of the prolonged mission, including mental health challenges, supply shortages and difficult living conditions aboard the carrier. At the same time, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has rejected reports portraying conditions aboard the Lincoln as being as severe as described, saying some of the reports have been misrepresented.

The USS George Washington is now heading towards the Middle East and is expected to relieve the USS Abraham Lincoln.

The carrier departed Vietnam and is moving through the Strait of Malacca towards the Indian Ocean before continuing towards the Middle East. The replacement is expected to allow the Lincoln and its crew to return home after its extended deployment.

US officials have described the carrier rotation as a planned move, although the deployment comes at a time when concerns over the Lincoln’s prolonged mission have intensified.
