Severe Cold Wave Grips Uttarakhand, Munsyari Freezes at -25°C

Dehradun: Amid the severe cold in Uttarakhand, Munsyari has been recorded as the coldest area, with the minimum temperature reaching minus 25 degrees Celsius. Additionally, temperatures below freezing have been recorded in seven high-altitude areas of the state.

Fresh Snowfall Intensifies Cold in Chamoli

Last evening, Ali Binani Bugyal in Chamoli received its second snowfall of the season, further intensifying the cold in Chamoli.

Snowfall and Rain Likely in Five Districts

According to the Meteorological Department, five districts—Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh—are expected to experience light rain and snowfall in higher altitudes today. Very light rain or snowfall is expected in isolated areas in areas above 3,000 meters in these districts.

    Fog Alert Issued for Plains

A separate alert has been issued for the plains. Fog conditions are expected to persist in Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Dehradun, Pauri, Nainital, and Champawat districts, which is expected to impact visibility during the morning and late evening hours. A yellow fog alert has also been issued for Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar.

    Cold Expected to Intensify Further

According to the forecast of the Meteorological Department, the effect of cold may increase further across the state due to snowfall in the hilly districts and fog in the plains.

Extremely Low Temperatures in Himalayan Shrines

The effects of the bitter cold are clearly visible in the high altitude areas of the state. According to Meteorological Department data, the minimum temperature in Badrinath was recorded at minus 24 degrees Celsius. In Munsyari, the mercury reached minus 25 degrees Celsius, making the area extremely cold.

Similarly, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 20 degrees Celsius in Gangotri, minus 20 degrees Celsius in Kedarnath and minus 18 degrees Celsius in Harsil.

Hemkund Sahib and Yamunotri Also Freeze

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature in Hemkund Sahib was minus 18 degrees Celsius, and in Yamunotri, it was minus 16 degrees Celsius. Due to the continuously falling temperatures, the effects of cold and frost are increasing in these high-altitude areas.

    Cold weather in the mountains

A sudden cold wave has gripped Almora. Heavy frost fell overnight, leaving fields covered in a white sheet. The frost has further lowered temperatures, increasing the chill. The cold was felt more acutely in open areas during the morning.

    Cold Conditions Persist in Pithoragarh

The skies in Pithoragarh district remain clear, but light snowfall and frost have continued in the higher Himalayan regions for the past two days. This is resulting in severe cold in the morning. Today, Pithoragarh recorded a minimum temperature of 3 degrees Celsius.

At the same time, there was dense fog in Bageshwar in the morning, due to which visibility reduced and the effect of cold increased further.

Weather Forecast for Next Three Days

January 6: According to the Meteorological Department, dense fog is likely to occur at isolated places in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts on Tuesday. Dense fog may also occur at isolated places in the plains of Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun districts. Poor visibility is expected to impact traffic during the morning and late evening hours.

January 7: The weather is expected to remain largely the same on Wednesday. The Meteorological Department has reported that dense fog may occur at isolated places in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts, as well as in the plains of Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun. Due to the persistent fog, the effects of cold will be felt throughout the day.

January 8: There’s no hope of respite from fog in the plains of the state on Thursday. Dense fog is expected again in parts of the plains of Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar, Nainital, Champawat, Pauri, and Dehradun districts. Poor visibility in the morning will require drivers to exercise extra caution.
