Uttarakhand: Congress stages protest, demands 33% Reservation for Women in State Assembly

A massive sit-in protest was organized under the leadership of State Congress President Ganesh Godiyal to press for the demand to implement 33 percent reservation for women in the Uttarakhand State Legislative Assembly. Senior party leaders and a large number of party workers participated in the event.

Speaking at the one-day sit-in held near the Assembly building, State Congress President Ganesh Godiyal stated that the government is misleading the public. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister Harish Rawat asserted that the party has always stood in support of the Women’s Reservation Bill, both in the past and will continue to stand firmly behind it in the future.

Our challenge to the Central Government is this: resolve the complexities surrounding delimitation immediately, convene a parliamentary session in the Lok Sabha, and pass the bill. He announced that on Thursday, the Congress party would stage a sit-in protest in front of the Legislative Assembly to demand the implementation of the Women’s Reservation Bill.

The Ruling Party has Complicated Women’s Reservation: Congress

He said, “We demand that, starting from 2027, 33 percent reservation for women be granted based on the current strength of the Legislative Assembly, the Lok Sabha, and the Rajya Sabha. During the tenure of the Congress government, the Women’s Reservation Bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha as early as 2010, and we were prepared to pass it in the Lok Sabha as well. ”

He added, It was former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi who pioneered the concept of 33 percent reservation for women at the Panchayat level; as a direct result of that initiative, India today boasts the highest number of women representatives in local governance bodies (Panchayats) compared to any other country in the world.
